Languages, above all dialects (including Rhenish, Hessian, Bavarian, Badenese and Swabian), have accompanied me throughout my life. As the daughter of two Rhinelanders, I was born in Frankfurt am Main and, following junior school, my family and I moved to Bavaria. Despite initial communications difficulties, I soon discovered at high school that I had a greater talent for languages than I did for numbers – which is why I chose to major in English and French. With my high-school diploma under my belt, I then faced the question of what I wanted to do with my life: I applied for various courses at several different universities and was accepted by the Institute for Translation and Interpretation at the University of Heidelberg, where I learned Spanish from scratch in only one semester. I was able to further develop this knowledge during several stints as an au-pair and one semester in Madrid.
